Karpathos Island

Karpathos is one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean and more particular in the Dodecanese complex. It is the second largest island in the Dodecanese and the southernmost, along with the island of Kasos. The length of its coastline is 160 Km and it is 49km long with a maximum width of 11km and a minimum of just 3.3 km. Its highest mountain is Kali Limni, which rises to an altitude of 1215m.

The island is distinguished from its variety, contrast and harmony with rich morphology with deep valleys, steep cliffs, headlands, forested areas which terminate at beaches. In the northern part of Karpathos the land and marine area are protected areas which are included in the NATURA 2000 (code GR 4210003) and is considered one of the largest in Greece. The region hosts a number of endemic and rare species of flora and fauna and additionally along the coast there is a considerable number of shelters to rest and reproduction of the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus.

The island is consisted of 10 villages with the capital in the city of Pigadia, which is also the main port and host most of the services like hospital, police station and others. The villages of Menetes of Volada, Olympos and many more are perched on steep cliffs and slopes with stunning view. The island of Karpathos along with the one in Sharia is rich in archaeological sites and findings from the prehistoric period, the classical period the Roman and Byzantine periods. Many of the findings are in the small, but modern archaeological museum located in Pigadia adjacent to Government House.

Karpathos has a rich folklore and cultural development and the customs of the island are preserved from generation to generation with the ritual showing no changes. Especially in the village of Olympos which is a living museum where women still wear traditional costumes while doing daily tasks. Throughout the island of Karpathos people preserve their tradition, with many festivals that consist of dancing and fun until early in the morning. Some of the most known festivals on the island is July 17 Agia Marina in Menetes, July 27 of St. Panteleimon in Stes Othos, 06 August Christ in Othos and Menetes, August 15, Virgin Mary in Menetes, Pyles, Aperi, and Olympos, 08 September Panagia Vrysiani in Mesochori and more.

The island of Karpathos has many seaside resorts (Afiartis, Foiniki, Ammopi, Lefkos, Diafani) where there are hotels and restaurants, giving the opportunity for visitors to enjoy some of the most beautiful and cleanest beaches.
